MyChart Test Immediate Results

The 21st Century Cures Act, is a law that aims to improve patient access to healthcare information. One of the key provisions of the act is the requirement for healthcare providers to give patients access to all their health information without delay.

In MyChart, our information portal for patients, you can now access lab, test, and imaging results as soon as they become available, often before your healthcare provider has a chance to see them. Results were previously reviewed by your healthcare provider before being released to you through MyChart.

There may be some who like to see results immediately; there may be others who feel uncomfortable or anxious seeing results before they can be interpreted and explained by a healthcare provider. Here are some considerations when looking at results in MyChart:

  • Be aware that you may see results that are hard to understand or suggest serious illness. That is why you may want to wait for your provider to contact you to learn your results.

  • If you are anxious about test results, you may want to avoid checking MyChart on Fridays. It can be frustrating to view results on a Friday afternoon because your provider is unlikely to be available to answer questions until Monday.

  • You should be aware that not all abnormal results are clinically concerning.

Because most results are sent to you immediately, you may see them before your health care provider does. Please give us a few business days to review results and let you know our thoughts. We look at every result. We will contact you about any result that concerns us.
